APA 7th Edition In-Text Citations

Source Type First Citation Subsequent Citations
One author (Smith, 2024) (Smith, 2024)
Two authors (Smith & Jones, 2024) (Smith & Jones, 2024)

  • According to Jones and Williams (2023), formatting errors are the most common reason for grade deductions.

Common APA 7th Edition Mistakes

  1. Using "Running head:" on student papers — This is only for professional papers
  2. Forgetting hanging indents on references
  3. Citing "et al." incorrectly — Always use "et al." for 3+ authors from the first citation
  4. Placing DOI as plain text — Format as hyperlink: https://doi.org/...
  5. Using "&" in narrative citations — Use "and" outside parentheses, "&" inside
  6. Including "Retrieved from" for non-dynamic sources — Only needed for pages that regularly update
  7. Capitalizing every word in reference titles — Only first word of title and subtitle, and proper nouns

APA Editorial Style

APA style goes beyond citations. The APA Publication Manual also covers:

  • Bias-free language — Use person-first language (e.g., "people with disabilities" not "disabled people")
  • Numbers — Spell out numbers below 10; use numerals for 10 and above
  • Abbreviations — Define on first use
  • Seriation — Use (a), (b), (c) for lists within paragraphs; use numbered lists for steps
